Local road contractors angry at gov’t

Local contractors have expressed disappointment in government’s move to pay its service providers with part of Eurobond proceeds to rather foreign contractors at their expense.

The Finance Ministry has released the cedi equivalent of 200 million dollars of the recent Eurobond for the payments.

The 400 million Ghana cedis to be channeled into the Consolidated Fund is for the payment of ongoing capital projects in various sectors of the economy.

The Association of Road Contractors has however described the development as most unfortunate.

The President, Ebo Hewton told Joy Business: "It is the bulk of the local contractors who are suffering because of this long delay in payment. We have the Cocoa Roads, we have Road Fund roads, and in all these cases there are arrears, one year and above that are supposed to be cleared...what is mentioned is the Consolidated Fund, and most of the Consolidated Funds projects are for foreign contractors."

Meanwhile, government is to make payments to the contractors through the Electronic Funds and Transfer System.

Beneficiaries are therefore requested to first submit certificates of work done as well as their bank details to the relevant MDA’s and MMDA’s by Sept 15.

Essien 13 280x390

Zambia coach Herve Renard has paid glowing tributes to Ghana midfielder Michael Essien – saying the Chelsea ace ought to be called ‘Sir’ for his sterling performances over the years.

The 30-year-old hugely impressed after coming on as a second half substitute to help the Black Stars to a 2-1 win over Zambia who had Herve – a former Ghana assistant coach – on their bench last Friday.

Essien was making his first appearance for the Black Stars after a two-year hiatus from international football.

Contrary to what many believed – that the former Lyon enforcer had lost a chunk of his energy in recent years and would struggle against the swift Zambians,

Essien went on to have probably one of his finest games for both club and country in recent times.

The composed and matured performance of the ex Real Madrid stabilized the rocking Ghana midfield at the time the Chipolopolo were well on top in Friday’s World Cup qualifier.

Zambia coach Herve Renard now says his team would have been better off had Essien continued with his international break while suggesting the Chelsea ace should be knighted and called ‘sir’.

“I don’t have a lot of experience, but I never coach or trained with a fantastic player like him [Essien],” he told GHANAsoccernet.com.

“During my time in Ghana I realized why some players are different. Essien was an amazing player and a great man.

“I think we have to call him ‘sir’. It would have been better for us if he was in London [with laughs].”

Essien will again be key to Ghana going into the playoff stage of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.

The Black Stars will head into a CAF draw on September 16 to determine its playoff opponent in the qualifiers for next year’s World Cup in Brazil.

Tsatsu's Attacks On Justice Anin Yeboah

02 Sept. 2013
unfair, unacceptable – Kufuor

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has described as unacceptable, attacks impugning the integrity of Justice Anin Yeboah one of the nine- member panel of Supreme Court Judges who sat on the recent election petition case.

According to Mr. J.A. Kufuor, comments by Mr. Tsatsu Tsikata, lead counsel for the National Democratic Congress suggesting that Mr. Anin- Yeboah voted in a certain manner because he was appointed into office under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government are "unacceptable and unwarranted"

. A release issued by the Office of the former president on Monday, cautioned the public to desist from making comments that will threaten the peace and stability of the country.

Kufuor cautions against attacks of courts Accra: 02 – 09 – 13 The Office of Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has noted with surprise and dismay attacks impugning the integrity of Mr. Justice Anin Yeboah one of the nine-member panel of Supreme Court Judges on the recent election petition case by Mr. Tsatsu Tsikata, lead counsel for the National Democratic Congress.

The Former President’s Office finds the comments that Mr. Anin-Yeboah voted in a certain manner because he was appointed into office under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government to be unacceptable and unwarranted, especially because there is evidence that all the justices voted on three of the six main issues before the panel in one way and variously differed on the other three.

We wish to further put on record that as many as six of the nine justices on the panel were appointed into office under the NPP government and therefore it is unfair to single one out because a faction in the case finds the way he is purported to have voted unacceptable.

This Office is fully satisfied that Mr. Justice Anin- Yeboah, is wholly qualified to be Supreme Court Judge as he was appointed to the position on merit. Mr. Tsitaka with his long standing at the bar should be appreciative of this and refrain from making remarks that will bring the Bench into disrepute.

In conclusion, the Office of the Former President cautions Ghanaians to desist from making comments that will threaten the peace and stability of the country.

Frank Agyekum Spokesperson/ Special Aide Office of Former President Kufuor Accra,
